Preventative Maintenance (PM)

The process of proactively replacing parts that are known to wear before they affect the performance of the pipette. Many pipettes that are out of tolerance fail because PM parts have worn out. Regularly scheduled PM is important to keep pipettes within specifications and prevent data errors.

Calibration

Process of adjusting the output of a measurement instrument to agree with value of the applied standard. Pipettes are often out of calibration due to part failure but simply replacing the damaged parts is usually not enough to bring the pipette back within calibration specifications. Micrometer adjustments need to be made by a trained technician in a controlled environment.

FAQ's

What is pipette calibration?

It is a process of examining and/or adjusting the pipettes to the true value by comparison to the standard which is set by the manufacturer of that said pipette. The standard in this case is the pipetting range set by the pipette manufacturer to be accurate and precise at low volume and high volume of the pipette. At Pipette.com, we perform metrology based pipette calibration; Metrology based pipette calibration provides a platform where the process is done within strict guidelines of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This ensures that there is a methodology and a standard set for all of the equipment used to calibrate the pipettes

What types of pipettes do you repair & calibrate?
  • Single channel manual pipettes and electronic pipettes
  • Multichannel manual pipettes and electronic pipettes
  • 4-channel pipettes
  • 6-channel pipettes
  • 8-channel pipettes
  • 12-channel pipettes
  • 16-channel pipettes
  • 48-channel pipettes
  • 64-channel pipettes
  • 96-channel pipettes
  • Positive displacement pipettes
  • Repeaters
  • Bottletop dispensers
  • Burettes
  • Motorized controllers
Why is metrology based pipette calibration important?

Metrology is defined as a science of measurement. Metrology based pipette calibration provides a platform where the process is done within strict guidelines of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This ensures that there is a methodology and a standard set for all of the equipment used to calibrate the pipettes. If this standard is not followed there cannot be a statistical guarantee that your results are accurate to true standards. Science is based on reproducible results. When reproducible results cannot be achieved all work is voided. Thus, scientists must strive that all of their work is reproducible. In order to achieve reproducibility scientists must have accurate and precise equipment. Pipettes are the cornerstone of all research, thus they must always be precise and accurate. In order to achieve this scientists must choose pipette service providers that follow strict metrology guidelines. Providers whose equipment is also calibrated and follows strict NIST rules can provide accurate and precise results giving you informative data on the status of your work and your pipette. Without metrology based calibration one cannot statistically say if the pipette is truly within range, it is simply an assumption using an uncertified piece of equipment

Are your technicians trained by manufacturers?

Yes, our technicians are trained by manufacturers and receive on-going training

Can you calibrate Rainin pipettes?

  • Jencons Pipette
Do you repair Pipet-Aids?

Yes, we can repair Pipet-Aids and motorized controllers

What is preventative maintenance (PM)?

Preventative Maintenance (PM) is a step in the calibration process that greatly enhances the longevity of your instrument. PM includes full disassembly, interior & exterior cleaning, piston polishing & re-greasing, and new seals/o-rings are replaced as needed. An in-depth PM process helps keep your pipettes operating at peak performance in between your regularly scheduled calibration service dates.

Do you perform calibration on site?

No, we do not offer any onsite services due to limited control of environmental conditions (i.e. temperature, humidity, air flow, and direct sunlight) and use the proper equipment (ultra-micro balances situated on marble tables). The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), published a policy in 2012 stating that higher measurement uncertainties are expected from onsite calibration. View that policy here: A2LA Policy P104

Accuracy & Precision is important when I use my multichannel pipette, what calibration plan would you recommend?

We recommend adding individual channel calibration for your multichannel pipette if you need each channel to be precise and accurate (such as when preforming RT-PCR, ELISA, ECL and Bioassays). This means each channel is individually adjusted, weighed, and calibrated. To add this to any pipette calibration service, check the box for “Multi-Channel Readings (per channel) on the “Pipette Service Order Form”

How much does it cost to fix my broken pipette?

We provide free repair estimates once the broken pipette is in our calibration facility. We only charge you for pipette calibration and replacement parts

How long does Calibration take?

To request 24 HOUR SERVICE” on the Pipette Service Order Form and a additional charge.

Metrology Based Calibration

All measurements are subject to uncertainty and a measured value is only complete if it is accompanied by the quantified statement of uncertainty. Measurement Uncertainty (MU) is a key factor in a gravimetric metrology based calibration and it will provide a lot of information on the quality of the company performing the calibration. Pipette.com provides MU data to support calibration measurements with appropriate levels of confidence.
